Fudan University was founded in 1905 by modern educator Ma Xiangbo, originally as Fudan Public School. It later developed into a private university and then became a national university. In 2000, Fudan merged with Shanghai Medical University and expanded its scope. Over more than a century, it has grown into one of China’s most prestigious and comprehensive research universities with strong international rankings and academic influence.
Fudan University’s academic and research activities are spread across four major campuses in Shanghai: Handan (main campus), Fenglin, Jiangwan, and Zhangjiang. These campuses collectively support classrooms, research institutes, libraries, laboratories, student housing, and affiliated hospitals, creating a large urban university environment that blends historical buildings with modern facilities.
The governance structure of Fudan University is led by a President and supported by administrative bodies that include deans and faculty leaders across its many schools and departments. As a public university, it is affiliated with China’s Ministry of Education and also receives support from the Shanghai Municipal Government. Institutional governance oversees academic programs, research initiatives, international cooperation, and student services.
Fudan University offers a wide range of undergraduate, graduate, doctoral, and postdoctoral programs across disciplines such as humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, engineering, medicine, business, and management. It hosts dozens of schools and departments that engage in both teaching and research. Fudan is part of national higher education projects such as Project 211, Project 985, and the Double First-Class initiative, reflecting its commitment to research excellence and comprehensive academic development.
Student life at Fudan University is rich and diverse, with a large international student community and numerous student organizations, cultural events, and extracurricular activities. Students can participate in academic societies, cultural clubs, and professional development activities. The university’s central location in Shanghai also offers access to broad cultural, social, and professional opportunities, enhancing the student experience beyond the classroom.
